Maybe it works pretty well or maybe that's just the norm.
I do believe, however, that they should let the featured game spot go to someone else since It has that huge ad at the top.

Not really.
I'd like the same frontpage treatment and everyone else deserves, not this giant towering box that basically screams "THIS GAME IS BETTER, PLAY THIS ONE".
I see the reason for this big box on the frontpage, but if the game is there, it really shouldn't be in the games section as well on the frontpage. Thats just overkill.
To be honest, i like the big ... thing, at least if they're gonna keep using it for other games though in the fututure.

I hate how things get different. I really freak out, I mean Reemus sets up a great start to test that new feature but who cares, it's over-commercialization, it just covers up REAL CONTENT. Like all the hard work the artists put in their work.

Before that I would always overlook the featured games, but at least now I can see one of the most popular games and it reminds me to check out the featured games.
I don't think Tom means much by it. I'm guessing he was just experimenting with how people would react to a new feature. Also, I think he just picked the game because it was the first thing he thought of and something he'd like to get attention.
A featured box is super important for a site that moves so much traffic to so much content. Siphoning content allows users to feel like they have a direction to go and become entranced in the site. It may be because of another submission being posted in the featured box that somebody actually feels compelled to view one of your submissions instead of being intimidated by the huge array of content. In the long run, it helps us all, even the people who don't get featured ever.
Also I think it's ironic that now 5 places promote this game, your blog included. :p
